I’ve heard that mixing spirulina with bananas, pineapple juice or oranges masks most of the flavor. I’ve experimented a little with banana and fresh young coconut milk but found the spirulina made the taste of a really yummy banana-coconut smoothie a bit yuck. So I’d rather create something that compliments the spirulina rather than just tries to mask it.

So here are my recipes that I use every day to make it at least a little bit enjoyable-

Spirulina Super Green Smoothie
1 cucumber
2 handfuls of baby spinach leaves
1 green apple
1-2 cups of good quality water
1 tablespoon of spirulina
1 teaspoon of wheatgrass powder (optional)

Blend in a vitamix or super great blender until well combined. If you prefer it sweeter, you an add it a little xylitol or honey.

Spirulina Green Juice

4-5 sticks of celery (leaves and all)
2 carrots
1 green apple
1 tablespoon of spirulina

Juice celery, carrots and apple. Then blend the juice with the spirulina. You can try just stirring it in but I don’t like clumps so I prefer to blend.

And if you’re still eating cacao, these spirulina chocolate balls from David Wolfe’s book Superfoods (I highly recommend you get yourself a copy of this book) are amazing. They absolutely are the best way to eat spirulina that I’ve found yet. If you don’t have a sweet tooth, you may not love them as much as me but I find them simply divine.

Spirulina & Chocolate Balls

1/4 cup hempseeds
1/2 cup cacao powder
2 tablespoons of spirulina
2 tablespoons coconut oil
3 tablespoons raw honey
a pinch of celtic sea salt
the inside of 1 vanilla bean (scoop out the seeds)

Melt coconut oil if it’s set. You can do this buy putting it in a dehydrator, leaving it out in the sun or immersing the jar of coconut oil in a bowl of hot water.

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. It will get all black and extremely sticky!! Roll into balls and set in the freezer. I love to eat these straight out of the freezer. They’re incredibly addictive and taste amazing.

Zucchini / Spirulina Hummus

1/2 cup Tahini
6 medium zucchini
2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
2 Tablespoons Lemon Juice
1 Teaspoon sea salt
1 Teaspoon Cumin
1 Teaspoon Spirulina
1 Large Garlic Clove
Sprinkle of Paprika
Directions
Peel the zucchini until all the green skin is removed. (This is very important! Unpeeled zucchini will make it too chunky)
Slice peeled zucchini into smaller pieces.
Combine all ingredients except Paprika into food processor and blend until creamy and thick. If not desired consistency, add a little bit of water while blending.
Serve in a bowl or store Zucchini Hummus in a container and sprinkle with paprika. Great garnishes or hummus variations can include other fresh or dried herbs, sun dried tomatoes, red peppers, a drizzle of olive oil, and olives.

Going Green Smoothie

Ingredients:
6 – 8 oz water
1 – 1½ cups frozen mixed berries
½ ripe banana
1 – 2 tsp Spirulina powder
½ – 1 tsp Green Phyto-Power

Directions:

Add fruit and water to a blender and blend on high until it is the consistency you prefer (Hint: the thicker it is the more you will taste the fruit vs. the greens). Add more fruit, ice or water to reach the right consistency for you.

For beginning smoothie makers or those who don’t yet have an appetite for green foods, start with 1 tsp Spirulina powder and ½ tsp Green Phyto-Power. Increase to 2 tsp Spirulina and 1 tsp Green Phyto-Power over time as your palate adjusts.

Gently blend in the products by placing your blender on the lowest speed and blend until just mixed.

Enjoy!

Note: Once you have the full amount of product in the smoothies and you are enjoying the taste of your fruity greens, try increasing the nutritional content even more by adding spinach or kale in with the fruit and blend as usual.
